Let’s explore Fiji.

Fiji’s cluster of heavenly islands is located in the middle of the South Pacific, just East of Australia and North of New Zealand.

Scattered over 49,000 square miles of ocean, it’s a tropical paradise of palm-fringed white sand beaches and lush rainforests ringed by thriving coral reefs and fish-filled lagoons.

Roughly one-third of our 333 islands are inhabited. Most people live in the urban areas of the two large islands – Viti Levu & Vanua Levu.

Fiji Map
Viti Levu

Fiji’s unofficial “mainland.” Here there are markets, rainforests and rivers, resorts and pretty beaches.

Mamanucas

Sun-kissed chain of 20 or so islands. Most are an hour’s boat ride from Denarau or a short seaplane or helicopter ride from Nadi. Many islands are home to barefoot-elegant resorts or family fun resorts and coconut trees.

Yasawas

The Yasawas are a chain of islands northwest of Viti Levu. Get here via seaplane or high-speed catamaran. Ideal for those looking for exclusive resorts, luxurious beaches, and unspoiled islands.

Vanua Levu

Vanua Levu is Fiji’s second-largest island but is surprisingly not touristy. Mountainous and covered with palms, this is the place to come if you like having an entire beach, and nearby Rainbow Reef, to yourself. It’s a short flight from Suva or Nadi—ideal for families, divers, and honeymooners.

Taveuni

The third largest island in Fiji,  offers excellent hiking trails, hidden waterfalls, and black beaches. Home to world-class scuba diving. We are calling all nature lovers.

Kadavu

Is famous for its birdlife (bring the binoculars). This rainforest island is also ringed by Great Astrolabe, among the planet’s largest barrier reefs, and only has one small town. A win for anyone who wants to get back off the grid and back to nature.

Lomaiviti Group

Authentic and rustic, a visit here offers a look into Fiji’s colonial past. The country’s first capital at Lavuka is now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Travel Guide

People

Known as the happiest …..

Fiji’s population of more than 880,000 is a melting pot of indigenous Fijians (i-Taukei), Indo-Fijians, Chinese, Part-Europeans, and other South Pacific Islanders who call Fiji home. Despite their varied cultural backgrounds, locals are collectively referred to as Fijians.

Language

English is Fiji’s official language, but you’ll often find that most people are bilingual – speaking Fijian or Hindustani as well.

Currency

The Fijian dollar. When leaving the resort, it is good to have some cash handy – particularly on the smaller islands.  Best to exchange currency at the Nadi airport on arrival.

Banks are open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday – Friday, and 9:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturdays at selected areas. ATMs are located around the country and at larger resorts and hotels.

Weather

There are two seasons here – warm and even warmer! It’s a sunny, tropical climate that’ll wash the winter chills from your bones. From December to April, the temperatures are a comfortable 71° – 91°F.  May to November to be slightly cooler, with temperatures ranging from 66°- 84°F

Health Requirements

Fiji is free from malaria, yellow fever, and major tropical diseases. Inoculations are required IF you are traveling from an infected area.

Entry Requirements

For US citizens, no visa is required for Fiji. You can stay up to four months without a permit

You must hold a passport valid for at least six months beyond your date of country exit and with one blank visa page. Hold proof of onward and return flights.

Free wifi is available for 30 mins at the Nadi Airport arrivals concourse. Most hotels also offer wifi.  You can also pick up a temporary local sim card from any of their outlets at the airport or in major urban areas.

Tipping and Porterage

Tipping is not encouraged but feel free to reward someone for outstanding service. Contributions are appreciated to the “Christmas Fund” at each resort.

Credit Cards

All major credit cards are accepted, particularly MasterCard, Visa. A service fee of 3-5% may apply.

Electricity

The local electric current is 240 volts AC 50Hz—Fiji’s three-pin power outlets.

Most leading hotels and resorts have universal outlets for 240v or 110v shavers, hair dryers, and other electrical appliances.

Multi-purpose adapters and voltage converters can be purchased at some major department or hardware stores, but if you are traveling to a remote area, it is probably wise to bring one.

Water

Tap water. The water from the tap in Fiji differs from that of famous bottled water. Drinking tap water at major hotels and in popular tourist areas like Nadi and Suva is generally safe, but some visitors complain about the taste. Outside of these centers, tap water may not be safe to drink
